CHICAGO — A civilian employee with the Chicago Police Department shot a robber in North Lawndale early Monday, according to police.

Officers were responding to calls of a robbery in the 1300 block of South Sawyer Avenue at 5:57 a.m. when they came upon a 31-year-old man with a gunshot wound, said Officer Nicole Trainor, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The 31-year-old had tried to rob a 57-year-old man, an employee with the police department, Trainor said, but the man got a gun and shot his attacker.

The robber was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in unknown condition, Trainor said. More information on the incident was not available, she said.
