BOYSTOWN — A mother and her three young kids — including an 8-week-old in her arms — were hit and injured by a CTA bus in Boystown Monday morning, police and witnesses said.

The mother, 34, and older children are in good condition, and the infant's condition is "stable," police said. The children were taken to Lurie Children's Hospital and the mother went to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, all for unknown injuries.

The No. 8 bus was driving north on Halsted Street past Waveland Avenue when it struck two children, 6 and 2 years old, and the mother, who was carrying the 8-week-old, said police spokeswoman Ana Pacheco.

The bus driver, 57, was later cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk. The intersection has traffic lights for all four directions of travel.

The force of the blow knocked the baby from the mother's arms, but the infant was screaming and conscious when first responders arrived, said Uptown resident Ellen Hunt, who witnessed the incident.

"The sight of that infant lying face-down on the pavement was awful," Hunt recalled.

The injured woman was able to retrieve her baby and sat on the curb until emergency personnel arrived. The driver went to speak with her after the crash, while another witness called 911, Hunt said.

The bus driver was injured and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police said. His condition was also stable, and his injuries were not life threatening, Pacheco said.

Halsted buses were rerouted for about 45 minutes after the crash, but returned to normal service around noon, according to the CTA.

Police are still investigating the crash.
