WICKER PARK — A historic brick and limestone Victorian home on a large lot at 2138 W. Caton St. is now listed at $997,500 after a $500,000 price drop.

Anchoring the east end of historic Caton Street, a rare block lined with Old World mansions, the roughly 4,700-square-foot home is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Built in 1891 for businessman and Norwegian heritage booster Marius Kirkeby, father of successful hotelier Arnold Kirkeby, the home was designed by architects Faber & Pagels.

“Many original details were painstakingly restored including leaded-glass windows, plaster walls, ceiling medallions and cove moldings,” listing broker Jennifer Ames of Coldwell Banker said.

Longtime owner Mark Yee and his family also went to great lengths to preserve and restore the exceptional carved staircase, period lighting, fireplaces and the domed turret with six curved glass windows, Ames said.

During the renovation, the attic and lower level were developed into a new family-oriented living area.

The home includes a rear deck, a fenced-in landscaped side yard with a fruit-bearing cherry tree, and a two-car brick garage. It is close to the 606, shops, dining, nightlife and transportation.

The main level offers a dedicated entry foyer, formal rooms, an eat-in kitchen with stainless steel appliances, a powder room and access to the rear deck.

The second level includes a spacious master suite with a walk-in closet, a second bedroom and bath, and a library — potentially another bedroom.

Designed as a huge en suite bedroom/playroom for the owner’s twins, the attic functions as a bright and versatile bonus space. It includes a vaulted ceiling and a circular play area within the turret.

The lower level was excavated, creating a large recreation room plus a full bath, sauna, laundry, mudroom and storage.
