CHICAGO — Ariana Taylor has expanded her racing ventures on the South Side.

Taylor, who helped develop a 5K run/walk in Englewood in 2014, is bringing a similar event to Washington Heights in September. Taylor expects the "Race to Rise: City of Champions 5K Walk & Run," set for Sept. 3 at Jackie Robinson Park, 10540 S. Morgan St., to attract hundreds of runners to Washington Heights and surrounding neighborhoods.

"[The event] is developed to encourage the Chicago community to rise above violence, mental health challenges and other disparities striking the inner city," said Taylor, of West Pullman. "Inspiring every individual to champion each challenge with positive actions and life-changing solutions, together, we rise."

The Englewood "Ditch The Weight And Guns" 5K has been extremely successful since launching in 2014, bringing hundreds of runners, including Mayor Rahm Emanuel, to the South Side. The third Englewood event is Oct. 23.

"Its impact encouraged me to implement this race in another inner-city community," Taylor said.

The "Race to Rise" costs $25 and will take participants north and south from 103rd to 111th streets and west to east from Throop to Green streets. Three water stations will be on the course.
