PORTAGE PARK — All Chicago Police Department outdoor roll calls have been put on hold in light of the targeted shootings of officers in Baton Rouge and Dallas, department officials announced Wednesday.

The outdoor roll calls were announced by the department's top brass in January in the wake of the protests sparked by the release of a dashcam video showing a Chicago police officer fatally shoot 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times.

The roll calls were designed to “enable police and community members to interact and rebuild trust and foster transparency," department officials said.

While there are no "specific or credible threats" to Chicago officers, officials postponed the events "out of an abundance of caution," according to a statement from the department.

Three outdoor roll calls were planned this week in the Albany Park (17th) Police District.

Five police officers were slain July 7 while patrolling a peaceful anti-police brutality protest in Dallas.

Since then, Chicago officers have been urged to work in pairs "to increase visibility and strengthen officer safety," according to a statement from the department.

Three Baton Rouge, La., officers were slain Sunday by a gunman in an ambush, officials said.

The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation is collecting donations for the families of the slain Dallas officers.

Contributions can be made online at CPDmemorial.org/SupportDallas or by mail to the Chicago Patrolmen’s Federal Credit Union c/o Dallas Police Support Fund 1407 W. Washington Blvd. Chicago, IL 60607. In addition, donations can be dropped off at any Chicago Patrolmen's Federal Credit Union location.
