EDGEWATER — Edgewater residents fearing an influx of mattress stores, particularly at the site of former True Nature Foods, can relax: Kate's Cookies and Homemade Sin Bakery are bringing coffee and baked goods — not box springs — to the neighborhood.

In July 2015, representatives for the building and Mattress Firm said the mattress store was on its way, which would have been the fourth in a one-mile stretch of North Broadway, drawing ire from neighbors.

On Tuesday night, Ald. Harry Osterman (48th) notified the community the two businesses would be teaming up to take over the space with the new Edge of Sweetness cafe at 6034 North Broadway.

"I want to thank the property owner for working with us to find the kind of tenant and business that neighbors were asking for," Osterman wrote.

Kate Merrill, owner of Kate's Cookies, described the store as a full-scale bakery and coffee house "that doubles as an amazing gathering space for families and neighbors, including cooking classes, birthday parties and outdoor seating during the warmer months."

"Our dreams are becoming reality in the beautiful corner space on Broadway and Norwood in my own neighborhood of Edgewater," she said in a post on her business's Facebook page.

Homemade Sin Bakery, run by baker Paige Tyler, currently sells decadent baked goods like cakes, breads, pies and cobblers in Lakeview.

The owners hope to open by fall.
