EAST VILLAGE — An 1870s-era apartment building will be sold to the highest bidder at an auction on Aug. 17, according to the auctioneer, Rick Levin.

"It's older, that's for sure," Levin said of the building, which has four apartments in it that are currently vacant.

Located at 925 N. Damen Ave. in West Town's East Village enclave — south of Wicker Park and north of Ukrainian Village — the building was constructed in 1878, just a few years after the 1871 Chicago Fire.

On site inspections in the building are available from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on July 28 and Aug. 9.

The building is owned by 925 Damen LLC, which bought it for $595,000 in June 2015, records show.

A real estate listing describes the building as a "redevelopment opportunity" and "perfect for Single Family conversion or tear down."

On Wednesday, Levin said the building is being auctioned because "the seller has other projects and wants to sell it sooner than later."

When asked if the property could be demolished, Levin said that would be up to the alderman.

"There is commercial [retail] on the block as well as residential," Levin said, adding that there are parking spots behind the property.

Though certainly old, the building is not listed in the Chicago Historic Resources Survey, which is a starting point for seeing if the property is architecturally significant or has historic value.

Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd) could not immediately be reached for comment on whether he would support a demolition.
