AUSTIN — Officers shot and critically wounded a man during the raid of a "suspected gun house" on the West Side Saturday night, police said.

Around 9 p.m., officers entered an auto repair shop at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Kilpatrick Avenue after receiving tips that the business was "storing weapons," according to a police news release.

Inside, officers found a man who fit the description that had been relayed to them, police said.

Once the man saw the officers, he started to run away but "engaged police by pointing a handgun at one of them," at which point an officer drew his gun and shot the man, according to the release.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, police said.

Police said they recovered five guns at the scene, including a TEC-9 assault weapon.

No officers were hurt, police said.

The shooting is under review by the Independent Police Review Authority. The officer involved in the shooting will be assigned to desk duty for 30 days, the department said.

Police later found out that the auto shop was unlicensed and subject to closure, according to the release.
