CHICAGO — A kitten badly burned in a fire is recovering, an animal shelter said.

The kitten, called Sprout, was set on fire and had to go into intensive care earlier this week. Felines and Canines, an Edgewater shelter, posted about Sprout's plight on Facebook, noting that it would be expensive to treat his burns and asking for donations to help.

On Friday, the shelter said Sprout has "proven to be quite the little fighter:" He's eating his food, resting and is responsive.

The group shared a video of Sprout eating dinner:

But Sprout isn't able to stand or hold his head up on his own, Felines and Canines said.

"We will continue to help him stabilize until he is strong enough to start healing his wounds," the group said on Facebook. "We are working very closely with our vet to determine the best course of action to provide Sprout with the most successful recovery possible."

Felines and Canines needs the most help during the spring and summer, the shelter said, but that's also when donations tend to slow down.

Those who wish to help the shelter can donate online.
