JEFFERSON PARK — For many Far Northwest Side residents, the news that five police officers had been slain Thursday night while patrolling a peaceful protest in Dallas hit close to home.

Many residents of the Far Northwest Side are police officers and fire fighters whose families worry about them while on duty — and breathe a sigh of relief when they come home once their shift ends.

That grief transformed into an impromptu police support rally that left a growing memorial to the victims in Dallas outside the Jefferson Park (16th) Police District.

On Facebook, the department thanked those who created the memorial for their support.

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to our colleagues in Dallas," Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said in a statement. "The unspeakable loss of those brave officers is not just a tragedy for Dallas, but a tragedy for our entire country. They are heroes and we will never forget their legacy of service to their city and to our profession."

The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation is collecting donations for the families of the slain officers.  Contributions can be made online at CPDmemorial.org/SupportDallas or by mail to the Chicago Patrolmen’s Federal Credit Union c/o Dallas Police Support Fund 1407 W. Washington Blvd. Chicago, IL 60607. In addition, donations can be dropped off at any Chicago Patrolmen's Federal Credit Union location.
