LAKEVIEW — An off-duty officer broke up an armed robbery in Lakeview Sunday afternoon and helped bring two suspects into custody, police say.

Around 3 p.m. Sunday, a 63-year-old man was walking near the intersection of Sheffield Avenue and Barry Avenue when a man walked up, punched him in his face and pointed a gun at him, according to a police news release.

Another man appeared, and together they beat the 63-year-old while rifling through his pockets, according to the release.

An off-duty officer who "happened to be in the area" heard the man's cries for help and ran over, police said. He drew his weapon and identified himself, and the two robbers ran away with the man's wallet.

The officer chased the men and simultaneously called 911, police said. After a short search, police found and arrested two suspects who matched a "detailed description" given by the officer.

David S. Shabazz, 20, faces one count of aggravated battery to a senior, one count of armed robbery and one count of unlawful use of a weapon, police said.

Juwan Askew, 18, was charged with aggravated battery to a senior, armed robbery and resisting arrest.

A gun was recovered from the scene, police said.
