North Lawndale Shooting Kills Kewan Gillespie, 18, Running From Shooter

CHICAGO — An 18-year-old man was shot and killed Thursday afternoon in North Lawndale, police said.

At 4:45 p.m., officers responding to calls of a person shot found the man, shot in the back, in the 3100 block of West Douglas Boulevard, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman.

Witnesses said the man was running from someone who was shooting at him, Estrada said. The man was hit and collapsed on a porch.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Estrada said. He was identified as Kewan Gillespie, of the 8500 block of South Aberdeen, according to Cook County Medical Examiner's Office records. An autopsy showed Gillespie died of a gunshot wound in his back in a homicide.

The man was a documented gang member, police said.

No one was in custody.
