NORWOOD PARK — A man tried to lure a boy who jumped over a fence near Onahan Elementary School to retrieve a lost baseball, police said Wednesday.

The 8-year-old boy was playing baseball around 7 p.m. Saturday in the park outside the Norwood Park school when the ball went over a fence in the 6200 block of North Normandy Avenue near Oak Park Avenue.

The boy climbed the fence to get the ball, and as he was picking up the ball a man driving a green SUV or truck stopped his car, police said.

The driver offered the boy a ride along with candy, police said.

The boy ran back to the field and alerted family members who saw the vehicle head north on Normandy and turn east on Palatine Avenue, near St. Thecla Church and School.

No one is in custody in connection with the incident, police said.

The vehicle driven by the man may have been a Chevrolet Avalanche with white stripes and tinted back windows, police said.

No description of the driver was included in the alert issued Wednesday evening by police.

Anyone with information about the incident can call 312-744-8200.
