By Kelly Bauer | July 6, 2016 4:28pm | Updated on July 8, 2016 11:29am

CHICAGO — A fatal stabbing in Ashburn on Monday was done in self defense, police said.

At 2:10 a.m. Monday, Derion Smith, 23, and a 21-year-old man got into a fight in the 8000 block of South Pulaski Road, said Officer Kevin Quaid, a Chicago Police spokesman.

During the fight, Smith was stabbed in his neck. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition and was pronounced dead at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday. An autopsy showed he died of a stab wound in his neck in a homicide.

A 25-year-old woman was also wounded while trying to break up the fight Monday, Quaid said. A finger on her left hand was lacerated.

The 21-year-old man was taken into custody and later released without being charged, Quaid said. Investigators said the man acted in self-defense.
