Avalon Park Fire Leads Officials To Man Shot Dead, Police Say

CHICAGO — A 56-year-old man was found shot to death after a fire in Avalon Park on Tuesday, officials said.

At 6:37 a.m., police were helping the Fire Department deal with a fire in the 8000 block of South Stony Island Avenue when firefighters found the dead man inside the building, said Officer Kevin Quaid, a Chicago Police spokesman. The man had been shot in his head and was dead.

The Fire Department put out the fire, Quaid said. Police are conducting a death investigation.

The man's death was later determined to have been a suicide, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.
