AUBURN GRESHAM — An employee at an Auburn Gresham business was shot and killed while trying to stop a shoplifter on Tuesday, police said.

At 5 p.m., Jquinn McCune, 30, tried to stop a shoplifter at a retail store in the 7900 block of South Ashland and was shot, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a Chicago Police spokesman.

McCune, who moved to Chicago from Flint, Michigan, was shot in his chest. He was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Sweeney said.

McCune was identified in Cook County Medical Examiner's Office records.

Online, people who said they had worked for McCune or shopped at his store, Family Dollar, said he would be missed. One woman said he was "kind and patient" with children and had always made her "shopping experience nice."

"If you needed something he would help you," one person wrote on Facebook. "He was just trying to work for his family."

No one is in custody for the shooting, Sweeney said.
