SAUGANASH — For more than 35 years, Independence Day in Sauganash has meant two things: a parade and a picnic.

The annual parade organized by the Sauganash Community Association will step off at 9:30 a.m. from Kostner and Thorndale avenues, organizers said.

Children of all ages are encouraged to decorate their bikes in patriotic colors and ride the parade route.

All Sauganash and Sauganash Park residents can march or ride in the parade, which will feature marching bands, Scout troops, floats and antique cars. The parade will wind through the neighborhood's tree-lined streets before ending at Peterson and Forest Glen avenues, organizers said.

A flag-raising ceremony, including speeches from local officials, will take place after the parade.

The picnic, open to all dues-paying members of the association, will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Sauganash Park, 5861 N. Kostner Ave. Hot dogs and refreshments will be served while games and activities for all ages take place.
