JEFFERSON PARK — An American epic that issues "a call for decency in an age of dehumanizing wealth inequality," is the latest production of the Gift Theatre's 2016 season.

Tickets are on sale now for the Jefferson Park theater's production of "The Grapes of Wrath," by John Steinbeck, adapted by Frank Galati, which opened Thursday.

The classic tale of the Joad family, who after being forced off of their land in Oklahoma during the Great Depression journey west to California is a "a call for decency in an age of dehumanizing wealth inequality," said Michael Patrick Thornton, the Gift Theatre's founder and artistic director.

“Now, more than ever, this classic tale of the Joad family desperately trying to hold together in a dangerous America feels so urgent," Thornton said.

Directed by Erica Weiss, the production stars Gift Theater ensemble members Alexandra Main, Jay Worthington, Kyle Zornes and Paul D'Addario.

Sun-Times theater critic Hedy Weiss called the production a "wonderous" revival of the play originally performed in 1988 at Steppenwolf Theater.

Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and at 2:30 p.m. Sundays through Aug. 14 at the theater, 4802 N. Milwaukee Ave.

Tickets, which range from $25 to $35, are available online at thegifttheatre.org or by phone at 773-283-7071.
