EDGEWATER — Construction is underway at the former St. Andrew's Inn, which by this fall will be transformed into the new home of The Growling Rabbit, currently in Rogers Park.

The owners of the storefront at 5938-5940 N. Broadway in Edgewater were issued work permits by the city recently to join the two adjacent storefronts, create an entrance compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and do general electrical work, Growling Rabbit owner Laura Soncrant said. The work is expected to cost $50,000, according to the permits.

Once construction is finished in the next few days, Soncrant said she would be ready to file for additional permits that will keep the construction ball rolling.

"It's moving forward ... I'm really excited," Soncrant said Wednesday.

She still hopes for an opening sometime in September, she said, but said the project and construction has also required some "strategic planning" because it involves joining two stores into one.

In the meantime, Soncrant said she's working on new menu items that will appear at the Edgewater location, which will also include a pub (and pub menu).

Moving boxes and blueprints sit on a table inside the former St. Andrew's Inn, soon to become The Growling Rabbit brunch, dinner and pub spot. [DNAinfo/Linze Rice]
