CHICAGO — Only 14 teams in the history of Major League Baseball have finished the season playing at least .700 baseball.

This year's Cubs, currently winning about 68 percent of their games, could become the 15th — a feat that hasn't been accomplished in Chicago since the 1907 Cubs went 107-45 (.704).

Those Cubs, along with the 1908 Cubs, won world championships. No Cubs team has claimed a World Series title since.

The 1906 Cubs also played .700 ball, finishing a record-best 116-36 (.763), but they lost the World Series to the White Sox.

No MLB team has finished with a better-than-.700 winning percentage since the 2001 Mariners (116-46, .716), who lost in the American League Championship Series to the Yankees. Those Mariners are one of only three teams (1954 Indians: 111-43, .721; 1998 Yankees: 114-48, .704) to go an entire season winning at least 7 of every 10 games in the last 62 years.

The 1907 Cubs played games at West Side Park, also known as West Side Grounds, located at Wolcott Avenue and Polk Street near where Stroger Hospital is now.

The Cubs (47-22, .681 after losing Tuesday night) are currently hosting the Cardinals at Wrigley Field.
