COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — Prosecutors have filed charges against the man who was shot by police near the Puerto Rican Festival on Sunday.

Angelo Dixon, 19, is accused of pointing a loaded .40 caliber handgun at a Chicago Police officer about 9 p.m. Sunday. The officer pulled his own gun and opened fire, striking Dixon in both legs, prosecutors said.

Though Dixon admitted to "carrying a Glock for a friend," he claims the gun was pointed toward the ground when the officer began shooting, Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said during a bond hearing Tuesday.

Dixon, of the 2200 block of West Diversey Avenue, did not appear in court Tuesday. According to court testimony, he is still being treated for gunshot wounds to both legs at Stroger Hospital. Details about his condition were not immediately available.

According to prosecutors, police were on patrol in two marked squad cars near North and Washtenaw avenues about 9 p.m. Sunday when officers noticed a large group of people.

Police spotted Dixon walking away from the group, grabbing his side, Scaduto said. When one of the officers noticed a dark object he believed to be a gun, he began to chase Dixon.

That's when Dixon allegedly turned toward the officer and pointed a gun, authorities said. The officer pulled his own gun and fired two shots, striking Dixon twice in his legs, according to Scaduto.

Police helped Dixon until paramedics arrived, applying a tourniquet to his wounds, prosecutors said.

Officers recovered a .40 caliber handgun, loaded with eight live rounds, court records show.

Dixon is charged with aggravated assault of a police officer and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon for carrying a loaded gun without a valid FOID card.

This is Dixon's first adult arrest, prosecutors said. He has a prior juvenile conviction for theft.

Cook County Judge Laura Sullivan on Tuesday set bail at $250,000.

No mugshot was available.
