CHICAGO — An assault rifle was used to kill a 21-year-old man in the Back of the Yards Sunday afternoon, officials said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man as Salvador Suarez, of the 4500 block of South Hermitage Avenue.

Suarez was walking in the 1700 block of West 46th Street at 1:30 p.m. when someone exited a car and began firing at him, said Officer Michelle Tannehill, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

He was struck in the head and was pronounced on the scene, Tannehill said.

Police said the gun used in the fatal shooting was an assault rifle, perhaps and AK-47. An assault rifle was used to shoot up a house in Back of the Yards on Tuesday, and might have been used in a Memorial Day weekend shooting, according to police.

No arrests have been made, Tannehill said.
