CHICAGO — A shooting in South Shore left 20-year-old Demetrius Archer dead on Thursday afternoon, police said.

At 4:05 p.m., Archer was sitting on a chair on the sidewalk in the 7800 block of East End Avenue when a light-colored SUV pulled up and a man got out of the car and fired at Archer, said Officer Ana Pacheco, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The man stood over Archer as he shot him multiple times, Pacheco said. Archer was taken to Northwestern Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:40 p.m., officials said.

Archer had posted a message on Facebook just hours earlier, saying his back hurt. After the shooting, his friends replied to the post, writing that they missed him.

"He still had a whole life ahead of him," one person wrote. "Keep his memories alive ... ."

Archer was a documented gang member, police said.

No one was in custody in the shooting.
