COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A man on parole for attempted burglary has been charged with burglarizing an Edgewater apartment.
Police spotted Chester Covington, 46, walking down the street about 11 a.m. Wednesday carrying a red snow blower that had been reported stolen from a nearby garage, according to an arrest report.
It was in the low 90s at the time.
Officers had been called to the 6200 block of North Magnolia Avenue, where a 59-year-old resident reported someone breaking into his home about 10:40 a.m. Wednesday, court record show.
The man heard clanging near his back door and spotted Covington moving items around, Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said during a bond hearing Thursday.
The 59-year-old was able to scare off Covington, prosecutors said.
But police spotted him a short while later in the 1300 block of West Granville Avenue, where records show he was carrying the snow blower. The 59-year-old had given officers a description of the burglar, which matched Covington.
As police were arresting Covington about 11 a.m., a 39-year-old neighbor approached the officers and said she'd spotted Covington carrying the snow blower in a nearby alley, according to the arrest report. A garage door in that same alley was open, the neighbor said.
Upon further investigation, police learned a red snow blower had, in fact, been stolen from that open garage, the arrest report said.
Covington, of the 1300 block of West Estes Avenue, is charged with burglary. He is currently on parole for attempted burglary and has prior convictions for robbery, attempted robbery and drug cases, state records show.
Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas on Thursday ordered Covington held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
