LOGAN SQUARE — The 6-year-old girl who was shot in the back outside a Logan Square home last week has been released from the hospital.

Jaylene Bermeo was released from Stroger Hospital on Tuesday after spending more than a week at the hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Jaylene was admitted to the hospital with a gunshot wound to her chest June 6 after she was shot in a drive-by shooting while playing with sidewalk chalk alongside two siblings and her cousins, according to prosecutors.

The young girl was re-admitted to the hospital since then, but her condition was upgraded to "good" Monday, according to a statement from the Cook County Health & Hospitals System

Her family is not granting any interviews.

Jaylene was initially in critical condition with a punctured lung and a bullet lodged in her chest, close to her heart when she arrived at Stroger.

Prosecutors charged a 17-year-old boy with driving the Hyundai used in the drive-by, which occurred about 8 p.m. in the 2100 block of North Bingham Street.

No one has been charged with firing the gun as of Tuesday.

Prosecutors allege the shooting was part of a gang war between Spanish Cobras and the Latin Disciples and that the shooter was aiming for a rival Spanish Cobra member near Jaylene when she was shot.

Prosecutors said Jaylene's aunt's house was "associated with Spanish Cobras," and Ald. Proco Joe Moreno (1st) said a home on the block had been a "problem for years and years."
