COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A Pullman man fatally shot a 17-year-old boy after trying to rob a gas station security guard in Back of the Yards late Saturday, prosecutors said.

Deonte Davis, 26, appeared in bond court Tuesday on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery with a firearm.

Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. denied bail, calling Davis "a danger to the community."

It all started about 10:20 p.m. Saturday in the 5100 block of South Halsted Street, where Davis drove a silver Audi into a gas station and through his open window asked a 53-year-old security guard about his gang affiliation, Assistant State's Attorney Matthew Howroyd said during a bond hearing Tuesday.

The guard, who had been standing outside smoking a cigarette, misunderstood the question and thought Davis wanted directions, prosecutors said.

Davis then got out of the Audi, pulled a gun and demanded the security guard's belongings, according to Howroyd. The guard emptied his pockets, revealing he didn't have anything of value, and Davis got back into the car, prosecutors said.

Less than five minutes later, Davis pulled up to a house in the 5200 block of South Sangamon Street, where six people stood outside talking, Howroyd said.

Davis is accused of getting out of the Audi, pulling a gun and opening fire — shooting a 19-year-old man in his wrist and fatally striking 17-year-old Christopher Fields in his back.

Fields was later pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Prosecutors said Davis didn't personally know any of the victims he targeted Saturday.

Police arrested Davis about 11 p.m. Saturday in the 5200 block of South Lowe Avenue, which is roughly three blocks from the gas station and six blocks from the scene of the fatal shooting, prosecutors said.

After he was attacked at the gas station, the 53-year-old security guard called 911 and gave police a description of Davis and the silver Audi, Howroyd said. The 19-year-old man who was shot during the Sangamon Street shooting also called 911 to describe Davis and the car.

Officers on patrol spotted Davis and three other men standing near the parked Audi about 11 p.m., according to prosecutors. At least four witnesses were able to identify Davis as the shooter in the gas station and Sangamon Street attacks, Howroyd said.

The attempted robbery was captured on surveillance footage, prosecutors said, and a nearby church's cameras caught the silver Audi heading south on Halsted immediately after the attack.

That same church's cameras would also catch the Audi traveling east on 52nd Street away from Sangamon moments after the fatal shooting, Howroyd said.

According to his defense attorney, Davis, of the 9800 block of South Dobson Avenue, has a 6-year-old daughter and has finished his GED.
