HUMBOLDT PARK — A 27-year-old has been charged with murdering one man and paralyzing another during a daytime shooting near the 606 in March.

The shooting, which rattled residents near the scene and prompted Ald. Roberto Maldonado (26th) to hold a series of emergency community police meetings, left 25-year-old Luis Gonzalez dead and a 22-year-old man paralyzed from the waist down, according to prosecutors.

Dion Robinson of suburban Glenwood is charged with first-degree murder.

The attack happened about 6 p.m. March 30 while the victims sat inside Gonzales' black Chevy Malibu in the 3000 block of West Wabansia Avenue, prosecutors said. The pair had just driven a separate car Gonzales was trying to sell.

Robinson pulled up in a light-colored sedan and was "mean mugging" — or glowering at both Gonzales and the other victim in an intimidating way — according to Assistant State's Attorney April Gonzales, who spoke during a bond hearing Thursday.

Robinson then parked his vehicle, got out and approached the driver's side of the Malibu, prosecutors said.

When he reached the middle of the street, he opened fire, shooting a semi-automatic handgun a dozen times at the victims who were still in the car, according to April Gonzales.

Luis Gonzalez was shot twice in the head and twice in the neck.

The second victim was shot twice in the left shoulder and twice in the back and is now paralyzed, according to prosecutors.

Police found 12 spent bullet casings at the scene.

Police arrested Robinson Tuesday behind a home in the 4100 block of West Washington Boulevard in West Garfield Park.

An officer discovered a black Tec 9 automatic firearm on the driver's side floor of Robinson's rental car outside the home, according to prosecutors. The Tec 9 was not the weapon used in the homicide.

Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil on Thursday denied Robinson bail.

Ald. Maldonado, who pushed police to step up their patrols following the shooting, praised officers for making the arrest.

"This is the type of targeted and coordinated activity I have been pushing for," Maldonado said.
