AVONDALE — A man was shot in the head after an argument at a gas station in Avondale Sunday morning, police and witnesses said.
Just after 6 a.m., the man was involved in an argument at the intersection of Belmont Avenue and Pulaski Road when someone pulled out a gun and shot him in the head, according to Officer Bari Lemmon, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.
The man was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, Lemmon said.
Michael, who declined to say his last name, said he and his wife were awoken in their apartment when they heard "three or four men" arguing at the BP gas station across the street. He looked out his window to see someone run up to one of the men and shoot him in his face.
After the shooting, crime scene tape was drawn around a black sedan in the gas station's parking lot.
"It was scary, especially 'cause this never happens here," Michael said. "I go out walking here with my 8-month-old daughter all the time, and I always feel safe. There are always random tussles here and there, but it's nothing like the South or West Side."
The neighborhood has been rocked in recent months by a series of shootings on high-traffic streets, including the murder of a bouncer at Brudder's Bar & Grill, 3600 N. Pulaski Rd., and a fatal shooting outside a Moroccan restaurant in the 4300 block of North Elston Avenue last month.
