EAST GARFIELD PARK — The "3rd Annual Stop The Violence Basketball Shootout" will take place on Sunday, June 5 at Westinghouse College Prep, located at 3223 West Franklin Blvd. in East Garfield Park.

The shootout starts at 10 a.m., with a $5 donation. Children under 17 can get free admission.

The shootout will showcase alumni teams who attended high schools such as Marshall, King College Prep, Curie, Manley, and Westinghouse among others.

Jimmy Sanders, who starred in the 1990s for Westinghouse, spoke to DNAinfo about the goal of the event.

"This event is for the alumni to interact with the kids. To talk to them about the violence. And having a better future," Sanders said. "I'm seeing kids standing on corners day and night. I'm seeing no jobs for them. I'm seeing no love in the hood."

For the event, Sanders partnered with Shawn Harrington who played for Marshall High School. Back in 2014, Harrington was driving with his daughter when someone shot him in a case of mistaken identity. The incident left him paralyzed from the waist down.

Sanders says the type of violence he has seen these days isn't like it was when he was growing up.

"There was still violence, but growing up in the streets kept the kids safe. Our neighbors took care of us like we were their own," Sanders said. "The elders raised us to respect each other."

The shootout will also have a slam dunk contest, along with revealing the top five Chicago Public Basketball players of all-time based on fan voting.
