MOUNT GREENWOOD — St. Xavier University's softball team dropped a pair of games to Oklahoma City University Thursday night in the finals of 2016 NAIA Softball World Series.

The No. 5-ranked Cougars were awarded runner-up plaques after being shut out twice by Oklahoma City’s freshman pitcher Georgia Wall.

Wall was named the MVP of the series after posting a 6-1 record at the games in Sioux City, Iowa. She allowed just four earned runs in 46 innings of work in the championship tourney, according to a league report.

Senior Nicole Nonnemacher of Downstate Bloomington was on the mound for both games for St. Xavier. She has been the NAIA national pitcher of the year twice in her collegiate softball career.

This was St. Xavier’s seventh NAIA World Series appearance and first since 2013. It is 12-13 all-time at the series and finished the season with a record of 46-10-1.

The Cougars defeated the Stars 1-0 in an earlier meeting on May 30. But Oklahoma came back through the elimination bracket to claim its ninth national championship and first since 2007.
