ENGLEWOOD — Community members will participate in cooking demonstrations and learn how to complete basic plumbing and home repairs Saturday.

Those free workshops are examples of what will be available to Englewood residents at this year's "Engelwood Neighborworks Day" event, put on by Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago. The annual event will be in the U.S. Bank courtyard, 815 W. 63rd St. from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If it rains, the event will be moved inside to the fourth floor.

One beautification project will have everyone planting flowers in the courtyard between the bank and parking lot.

Organizer Rashanah Baldwin of Englewood said the event is meant to help people not only give back to the community, but also equip them with skills.

"They’re cleaning up, but also they’re learning other things that can help improve their quality of life," she said. "I think [this event] is important because it shows that we give back to the community. We care about the community. We want residents to care about where they live and find out ways they can give back and beautify their neighborhood, and just really take pride in living in Englewood."

Each workshop will include a bicycle raffle and other give-a-ways. The event is for the entire family. There will be a face painter, free food and more. Participants must attend workshops to qualify for give-a-ways and refreshments.

Here's a list of workshops scheduled:

•Attendees will receive instruction on how to complete plumbing and basic home repairs by Englewood's own John's Hardware and Bicycle Shop

•Parliament Builders and NHS Construction Specialists will provide a HVAC workshop.

•Aja McClahanan of Principles of Increase will present a youth workshop on financial literacy.

•Cherice Price of PHP (people helping people) will present an adult financial planning workshop

•Nancy Gilbert of Whole Cities will provide a healthy cooking demo: "Cooking with The Vegetables From Your Garden"
