WEST TOWN — Three men are charged with armed robbery in a West Town stickup on West Huron early on Memorial Day.
Around 3:15 a.m. Monday morning, the men walked up to someone in the 2000 block of West Huron Street and one of them pointed a gun, demanding the person's belongings, police said. The men then fled in a beige SUV.
Later, officers saw the same SUV double-parked in Bronzeville on the South Side, police said. During an "investigatory stop," officers found a handgun as well as the belongings of the person who had been robbed.
The robbers were identified as Markis Hubbs, 24, of suburban South Holland; Kenyon Armstrong, 18, of the 400 block of East 133rd Street and Marquise Key, 19, of the 13100 block of South Eberhart Avenue.
All three were charged with one felony count of robbery, two felony counts of attempted robbery and one misdemeanor count of unlawful use of a weapon.
The three men, in policy custody on Tuesday, had two women who were with them in the car but served as witnesses and did not participate in the muggings, a police source said.
Kim Shepherd, a Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) volunteer, shared news of the arrests on the Ukrainian Village Neighborhood Watch Facebook page Tuesday.
"After committing armed robberies overnight in the 2000 block of West Huron and 1800 block of a nearby street, they were apprehended by officers. They all live on the South Side and were driving up here to commit the robberies," Shepherd said.
Shepherd credited the efforts of a Near West District patrol officer for catching the alleged robbers.
"Without the diligence of the patrol officer who responded to the 911 call of an armed robbery early Tuesday morning, this crew very well might still be out on the street. We can't thank him enough for his dedication," Shepherd said.
Shepherd said she hopes the arrests will deter future crimes.
"Hopefully, offenders traveling from miles away to our neighborhoods will soon realize that if you come to West Town to prey on our residents, you will be caught and your victims and their neighbors will ensure you are prosecuted and held accountable for your crimes," Shepherd said.
