PORTAGE PARK — A project to replace century-old pipes in Portage Park is set to get underway, Ald. John Arena (45th) said.

The project will replace eight-inch water mains in an effort to prevent homes in the area from flooding, officials said.

During the work, set to start at 7 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. on weekdays, Irving Park Road between Cicero and Central avenues will be closed to traffic in one and two block sections as the work progresses, Arena said. Drivers should expect trips in the area to take longer than usual, and should follow all posted detours, the Arena added.

Parking will be banned in the work area, Arena said.

Residents will be able to reach their homes, even during work hours, and business owners will also be allowed through the work zone, Arena said.

When crews are off-duty, one lane will be open to traffic, Arena said.

Residents can stay up-to-date on the project's progress by signing up online for the city's WaterALERT program using project identification number 1601123, Arena said.
