MOUNT GREENWOOD — Free tuition is available for those enrolling in the Beverly Area Planning Association's Parent University.

The parenting seminar will focus on "Unlocking the Joy of Early Learning" from 10 a.m.-noon on June 11 at the Chicago Public Library's Mount Greenwood branch.

The discussion at the library at 11010 S. Kedzie Ave. is designed for parents of children in preschool-second grade and will feature Marie Kielty, a retired public school teacher who provides now training for teachers and parents of young children.

Kielty will explain how parents can engage their child in hands-on play that develops early literacy and early numeracy. This includes showing how parents can help young learners understand math concepts and explain the stages and steps of reading and writing composition, according to organizers of the seminar.

Arlene Gottardo will also share children’s books that inspire family reading time with emerging and early readers. Gottardo is the children's librarian at the Chicago Public Library's Beverly branch.
