UPTOWN — On the day a "pro-family" group plans to hold protests at Target stores across the nation, transgender community members and allies are planning a counter-protest at the Uptown store.

Target has been making headlines for months with its stance "to welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity." A petition started by American Family Association boycotting Target's bathroom policy received more than 744,000 signatures, according to the USA Today.

The organization Faith2Action, which calls itself "a launching pad for the pro-family movement," has designated June 4 as "Don't Touch Our Daughters Day" with a commercial announcing the boycott. The ad touts its Christian roots and includes the message "No matter how loud it's shouted, sin is not a civil right."

At 10 a.m. Saturday, Trans Activist, Chicago's Gay Liberation Network and allies will host a protest in support of Target at the Uptown location at 4466 N. Broadway "regardless of whether or not opponents of equal rights show up," according to a press release.

“We want the public to know that trans people do not transition because of a sexual fetish or deviant mindset," said Tiffany Foster-Grant, one of the pro-trans protest organizers.

"We are real human beings with real civil rights needs who just want to live our lives as other people get to do. That includes such basics as using restrooms to carry out needed bodily functions while being guaranteed the same safety as other people," she said.
