COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — An Uptown man was caught trying to break into a Lakeview apartment early Tuesday, police said.

Officers were called to the 3200 block of North Seminary Avenue about 2:45 a.m. Tuesday after a 33-year-old woman noticed that several dishes and ornaments had been moved near her kitchen and back porch, according to an arrest report.

Police on the scene spotted David Smith, 34, running through a nearby gangway before they eventually found the man hiding inside a garage on the same street, court records show.

Smith admitted to opening the woman's kitchen window, reaching inside, grabbing a dish rack full of dishes and placing it on top of a cooler on the back porch, police said.

The 33-year-old woman told police that several ornaments hanging from her window had been placed in a nearby flower pot, according to the arrest report.

Officers found a chair under the woman's kitchen window. They believe Smith was trying to clear a path to quietly sneak into the woman's home — but accidentally awoke the woman while doing so.

Smith, of the 4900 block of North Kenmore Avenue, is charged with attempted residential burglary and criminal trespass to land.

Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. on Wednesday said Smith could be released on his own recognizance if he qualifies for the Cook County Sheriff's Office's electronic monitoring program. If not, Smith will be responsible for $75,000 bail.
