MAGNIFICENT MILE — Vince Vaughn may finally be ready to break up with Chicago.

The actor is under contract to sell his three-floor penthouse atop the historic Palmolive Building off Michigan Avenue a week after splitting the property in two, according to the multiple listing service

The sales would cap Vaughn's years-long effort to sell his high-rise home, which he paid $12 million for in 2006. Back then, he was dating Jennifer Aniston and the couple were living in Chicago during filming for "The Break-Up," their rom-com set here.

"For me personally — and I think most well-known actors who are together feel this way — I never enjoyed the paparazzi side of it," Vaughn told Playboy last year. "You like someone and you’re spending time with them; that’s separate and that was all fine. But I really spent most of that time finding ways not to be drawn into the attention."

Vaughn, a suburban Lake Forest native, asked $25 million privately for the penthouse before publicly listing it for $18.4 million in 2012. He cut his price again many times before opting last week to split the penthouse into two listings: one 35th-floor condo asking $4.2 million, and the two floors above for $8.5 million. Both condos went under contract Monday, records show.

"We had more people who said the [three-floor] space was a bit too much for them, and some people who want a full-floor condo but they don't want it to be so big," listing agent Katherine Malkin of Baird & Warner said last week. Malkin confirmed the two units are now under contract but declined to comment further Tuesday.

The two-floor, 7,880-square-foot penthouse has three bedrooms, three terraces with nearly panoramic views, and spacious wood-paneled rooms including a theater and billiards hall. The 35th-floor unit below is being marketed for a total renovation by a new owner.

Built in 1929, the Palmolive Building at 159 E. Walton Place is known for its Art Deco design and distinctive beacon that shines onto Lake Michigan at night. The tower was known as the Playboy Building for decades while the magazine ran its business there. A developer bought the tower in 2001 and converted it to luxury condominiums.

The Palmolive penthouse is Vaughn's last known property here. He sold a River North town home for $1.4 million last year, according to the Tribune. Click the slideshow above or scroll down below for more views of Vaughn's penthouse:
