PORTAGE PARK — In a tradition dating back 60 years, students from Portage Park Elementary School will mark Memorial Day by laying flowers on May 27 at the foot of the tree dedicated to members of the military killed in action in Portage Park, organizers said.

The ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m. May 27 at Portage Park, 4100 N. Long Ave., at a memorial tree at the northeast corner of Portage Park, near Berteau and Long avenues, organizers said.

Students in kindergarten through second grade will perform patriotic songs and lay the flowers at the foot of the memorial tree.

The tradition of marking Memorial Day with a ceremony in Portage Park was started more than 60 years ago by the members of the Portage Park Women's Club.

In the event of rain, the ceremony, which is open to the public, will be held in the school auditorium, 5330 W. Berteau Ave.
