COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A man on parole for burglary has been charged with burglarizing West Town and Pilsen buildings.

Sherwin Degraffenreid, 57, appeared before Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. on Monday on charges of burglary, residential burglary and possession of burglary tools.

Degraffenreid is on currently parole for a 2011 burglary conviction and has prior convictions for burglary, residential burglary and drugs, state records show.

"You are past the point of no return, sir," Judge Bourgeois said Monday before setting bail at $150,000. "This is not a young man making foolish mistakes."

According to prosecutors, Degraffenreid was captured on surveillance video driving slowly past an apartment building in the 1600 block of South Jefferson Street about 6:30 p.m. May 9. Degraffenreid allegedly parked at the end of the street before entering the building.

He was then seen exiting 45 minutes later carrying two laptops, silverware, a video recorder and cash, Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said during a bond hearing Monday.

The second burglary occurred about 1 p.m. Sunday in the 1700 block of West Hubbard Street.

Degraffenreid was spotted entering a building with an empty backpack and leaving a short while later with a bag stuffed full of electronic equipment, Scaduto said.

According to authorities, there were signs of forced entry and Degraffenreid, of the 2800 block of West Fillmore Street, was carrying two screwdrivers.
