COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A package thief stole nearly $20,000 worth of men's luxury shoes in Rogers Park, prosecutors said Thursday.

According to court records, UPS delivered a package containing 24 pairs of Santoni men's shoes to a home in the 1200 block of West Morse Avenue on April 22. At Nordstrom, a single pair of the handcrafted Italian shoes can cost up to $1,200.

The footwear had been sent to a 32-year-old sales representative who works for a shoe company, Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti said during a bond hearing Thursday.

But before the man could collect his package, 43-year-old Darlene Kayy swooped in — opening the box and stealing its contents, prosecutors said. According to police, the theft was captured on surveillance video.

Though an arrest report lists the shoes' value at $16,800, Antonietti in court Thursday said prosecutors believe the total loss was closer to $20,000.

Police arrested Kayy about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday after a witness was able to identify her on surveillance video, according to the arrest report.

Kayy, who is homeless, is currently on parole for attempted burglary, records show. She was charged this week with theft.

Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. on Thursday said Kayy could be released on her own recognizance if she qualifies for the Cook County Sheriff's Office's electronic monitoring program. If not, Kayy is responsible for $90,000 bail.
