ENGLEWOOD — More students from Chicago Public Schools won Gates Millennium Scholarships than any school district in the nation this year — and students from Lindblom Math & Science and Urban Prep acadamies led the way, district officials announced.

Some 35 students from 22 CPS high schools were among the 1,000 students nationwide to win the awards, which are valued at up to $250,000.

“The fact that Chicago once again leads the nation in Gates Scholars is a true testament to the hard work of our students, the dedication of their parents, and the devotion of teachers and educators all throughout CPS,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a press release.

CPS had 35 winners of the competitive, needs-based scholarship last year, too and has had the most recipients of any district for seven out of the last eight years.

A total of seven student winners attend Urban Prep Academy, which has campuses in Englewood, Bronzeville and on the Near West Side. Five recipients attend Lindblom at 6130 S. Wolcott Ave. in West Englewood. Four attend Kenwood Academy High School.

One recipient is JoeShawn Head. The Lindblom senior also received a $20,000 Foot Locker Scholar Athletes scholarship.

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program offers a needs-based scholarship each year with a grant that can be used to pursue a degree in any undergraduate major at any accredited college or university. Roughly 50,000 students of color apply for the scholarships every year, officials said.

The monetary value of a Gates Scholarship is estimated to be worth more than $250,000, depending on where a student decides to enroll in college. The scholarship pays the balance between what the family can afford and the total cost of tuition.
