DOWNTOWN — Excited Downtown workers flocked to the Daley Plaza's first farmers market of the season on Thursday.

The market, at 50 W. Washington St., runs from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Thursday through Oct. 27. It is the longest running farmers market in the city and offers an array of vendors selling fresh fruits, veggies, prepared foods and more.

Carol Palomar, a customer service representative for a student loan company, was enjoying a sandwich with white cheddar, apples and bacon from Gayle's Best Ever Grilled Cheese.

"I knew right away what I'd eat," said Palomar, who has worked near Daley Plaza since 2005 and says she comes to the market every week during the season.

Courtney Hill, a school administrator who works in Merchandise Mart, said she was aware that Thursday would be the first market of the season.

"I had to come by," said Hill, who was selecting cheese to buy at the Stamper Cheese Company's stand before running off to a meeting.

Vendor Geri Byrd, owner of Geri's Botanicals, a natural soap company based on the South Side, said she was so exited for her third year at the market that she had had a difficult time resting up.

"I could barely sleep last night. I've been working on this product since January," said Byrd, whose natural soaps, including charcoal and special concoctions for dry and oily skin, take several months to cure.
