COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A South Side man has been charged with stealing packages from West Town homes, including a pair of yoga pants.

Roberto Garcia, 28, was arrested Thursday after police got a call that someone was stealing packages in the 2000 and 2100 blocks of West Race Avenue, court records show.

Officers on patrol found Garcia, who matched the description of the package thief, in the 700 block of North Paulina Street about 3:20 p.m. Thursday, according to an arrest report.

Garcia was carrying packages that he claimed he found the day before "in the Downtown area," police said.

Officers recovered wrapped yoga pants and an Amazon package containing a black belt, court records show. The witness who had originally called police was able to identify Garcia as the man grabbing packages, police said.

Garcia, of the 3800 block of South Wood Street, is charged with theft.

Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. said Garcia could be released on his own recognizance pending trial if the Cook County Sheriff's Office agrees to provide electronic monitoring. If not, Garcia is responsible for $100,000 bail.

His defense attorney during a brief bond hearing said Garcia works as a dishwasher.
