LOGAN SQUARE — Teens from six local high schools are getting a chance to have their work featured in one of the neighborhood's most prominent galleries, the Hairpin Arts Center.

The second annual Around The Corner exhibit aims to boost youths in their artistic endeavors as they are "just around the corner" from their adult lives.

"Our students were treated with such respect and were encouraged to grow as individuals and artists," said Karen Anderson, who was a Lydia Urban Academy director during the project. "To have such positive interactions with adults in the community is priceless."

The organizers of the exhibition, the Northwest Arts Connection, started the project to influence teens to continue pursing art, to motivate them and to share their work with the community.

The artists have been working for months on their pieces with hopes to be selected for the exhibit at Hairpin Arts Center, 2800 N. Milwaukee. The exhibition opens Saturday.

Participating schools include Lydia Urban Academy, Luther North College Prep, Steinmetz College Prep, Aspira Early College High School, Upbeat Music and Arts and teens from the buildOn after-school program at Schurz High School.

"It really does mean a lot to the students and their parents," said Linda Galek, a teacher at Luther North College Prep. "Schools need the support of these outside organizations and the feedback was just great from both parents and students."

This year’s theme is Dreams for the Future. An artist reception is set for 1-4 p.m. Saturday. The art will remain on display 1-4 p.m. Sunday.

Teen musicians from Upbeat Music and Arts will be performing at the reception.
