SAUGANASH — The first of 35 long-delayed single-family homes set to be built in the heart of Sauganash is finally on the market.
But these three-floor homes — touted by developer K. Hovnanian Homes as being in "one of the safest neighborhoods in Chicago all while being less than 20 minutes from Downtown" — won't come cheap.
The homes on 4½ acres near 4300 W. Peterson Ave. will cost between $820,000 and $870,000, according to the sales website.
The original plan for the Sauganash Glen subdivision, approved by city officials in 2004, fell apart amid the scandal that ultimately landed developer Tony Rezko in jail and languished as the 2008 housing crash and Great Recession brought most new home construction to a halt.
The land, which was once home to the corporate headquarters of Walgreens and the home of Skil-Bosch Power Tools, had been weed-strewn and enclosed by a chain-link fence since 2006 until construction started last year.
Buyers can choose from six different styles of 2½-story single-family homes ranging from 3,800-4,300 square feet with detached three-car garages, according to the plans. The styles are named after literary giant like Emily Dickinson.
