COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A second man has been charged with robbing and shooting an off-duty Chicago Police officer in Washington Heights in March.

The 48-year-old officer was on his way home from studying for a detective's exam when two men approached his car with guns about 2:30 a.m. March 21 in the 10100 block of South Green Street, Assistant State's Attorney Jamie Santini said during a bond hearing Thursday.

Samuel Harviley, 24, and Demonte Majors, 22, are accused of opening the officer's car doors and stealing a cellphone and wallet before eventually shooting the man.

Harviley, who is on parole for a 2012 aggravated carjacking conviction, was arrested in March and held without bail.

Majors, of the 8700 block of South Sangamon Street, was arrested on a warrant Wednesday and charged with armed robbery, unlawful vehicular invasion and attempted first-degree murder.

Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas on Thursday ordered Majors held without bail.

According to prosecutors, the officer was not wearing a uniform at the time of the attack, but he was carrying a gun.

Majors and Harviley each opened one of the officer's front car doors about 2:30 a.m. March 21 and pointed guns at the man while demanding property. The officer allegedly handed over his cellphone and wallet before being ordered out of the car.

That's when Majors and Harviley forced the officer on to the ground and said they'd shoot him if he moved, Santini said.

When the officer kept moving, Majors told Harviley to shoot the man — and he did, striking the officer in the upper leg, according to Santini.

At that point, Harviley and his accomplice allegedly took off running. The officer was able to pull his own gun and fire toward the fleeing men, striking Harviley once in his left arm, prosecutors said.

The alleged robbers continued to run away, Santini said, and the officer called 911. He was treated at a nearby hospital.

Roughly 12 minutes after the shooting, Harviley arrived at Little Company Mary Hospital, where he gave a fake name, according to prosecutors. Police were called, and Harviley was later identified in a photo array.

After police arrested Harviley about 4:30 a.m. March 21, he confessed to trying to rob the officer, according to authorities. He allegedly admitted that "the gun he was holding went off," striking the officer, and that he and Majors met a third person in a getaway car.

Officers issued an arrest warrant for Majors, who was picked up this week in Michigan, Santini said.

Prosecutors have also filed charges against Majors in a November armed robbery that took place about 3:45 p.m. in the 9000 block of South Carpenter Street.

In that case, a 34-year-old man was trying to buy marijuana from Majors when Majors and two accomplices, who have yet to be charged, forced the victim at gunpoint into a car and drove him to an abandoned house at 90th and Carpenter, Santini said.

Once inside, Majors and his accomplices tied the victim's hands behind his back and stole a watch, necklace, $3,000 cash and some marijuana the man was already carrying, according to prosecutors.

The attackers allegedly fled, and the victim was able to free himself and call police. He later positively identified Majors in a photo array, Santini said.
