LAKEVIEW — If the world has seemed rather colorless since the death of Prince, perhaps some "Purple Rain" will brighten things up.

The rock musical will play three nights this weekend at The Brew and View, a regular feature at The Vic Theatre, 3145 N. Sheffield Ave.

The $5 tickets are still available for the 7 p.m. shows Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Since The Vic sells alcohol during the movies, attendees must be at least 18 years old.

"Purple Rain" debuted in 1984, starring Prince as The Kid. The partially biographical flick follows The Kid's budding music career and his troubled family life in Minneapolis — Prince's real-life hometown.

While "Purple Rain" did win two Razzie Awards, it was honored with an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score and heralded as a "watershed moment for movie soundtracks," as the Arizona Republic put it in a 2009 review.

Prince compiled the film's music in his sixth studio album, which has been ranked among the best in music history.

Hits like "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy" became worldwide sensations, and the Library of Congress designated "Purple Rain" as "culturally, historically or aesthetically important."

Prince died April 21 at his Paisley Park home in Minneapolis from unknown causes. The 57-year-old artist left a lasting legacy in Chicago, and Windy City fans rushed to honor the Purple One with tributes like a huge mural in Avalon Park and a candlelight vigil from the carolers behind "Merry Princemas."
