ENGLEWOOD — A 16-year-old boy was shot dead and three others were wounded in Englewood shootings Monday night.

Around 9:30 p.m., two boys, 14 and 16, were walking through an alley near the 7100 block of South Laflin Street when a man walked up and shot at them, according to Officer Ana Pacheco, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The 16-year-old was shot multiple times in the head and body, Pacheco said. He was brought to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The 14-year-old was brought to St. Bernard Hospital, where his condition stabilized after he was treated for a graze wound in his buttocks, Pacheco said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the boy as Randle Young, of the 1300 block of West 73rd Street.

Young was walking through the alley behind his cousin's house on 71st Place and Laflin Street, said William Brown, a neighbor of Young's cousin.

The 16-year-old and his friend were near the mouth of the alley when someone must have cut them off, Brown said. The man said he did not hear shots because he had fallen asleep but awoke later to see the commotion.

Brown, 77, said he did not know Young or his cousin, who was a next-door neighbor. He said he had no idea what prompted the shooting, but he regretted that the victims were so young.

Attempts to reach Young's adult cousin were unsuccessful.

"It's actually shocking to learn about," Brown said. "This is a quiet block. This is the first time we've had something like this on the block in 47 years."

Other neighbors weren't shocked to learn of the shooting and the age of the victims.

"Not really" surprised, said an older man who lived across from the shooting scene and asked not to give his name. "I live in Englewood. This goes on year after year, these young gang bangers."

In another shooting, around 11:15 p.m. Monday, two men were driving in the 700 block of West 71st Street when a dark sedan pulled up next to them and shot at them, Pacheco said.

One man, 23, was shot in the back, Pacheco said. The other man, 27, was shot in his right arm and left leg.

The men drove to St. Bernard Hospital, and they were transferred to Stroger Hospital. Police could not provide their conditions but said they were "stable."

Police said both men were documented gang members.

No one is in custody for either shooting, Pacheco said.
