DUNNING — A project about the deep roots of synchronized swimming at Wright City College won first prize at the Dunning History Fair, organizers said.

Martin Calkins took home $100 and bragging rights for his in-depth report on synchronized swimming at the college, which hosted the first national competition.

The fair, sponsored by the Dunning Neighborhood Organization, Ald. Nicholas Sposato (38th) and State Rep. Robert Martwick, (D-Jefferson Park), was designed to give students in third through eighth grades a chance to explore what Dunning looked like 25, 50 or 100 years ago, organizers said.

Paddy Lewis won $75 and second prize for his project and video on Robinson Woods, which is best known for its historic burial ground, according to the Cook County Forest Preserve District.

Gianna Calderon and Martina Perez-Zueleta shared the third-place prize of $50 for their project about the Dunning Insane Asylum.

The judges for the competition were Philip Garofalo, Daniel Pogorzelski and Al Opitz.

The winning projects are on display at the Dunning branch of the Chicago Public Library, 7455 W. Cornelia Ave., organizers said.

Organizers hope the Dunning History Fair will become an annual event.
