BEVERLY — Treadfit, a gym that offers combined treadmill and strength-training workouts, is moving to a larger location in Beverly.

Owner Jennifer Harkins said Friday that Treadfit will move in June to 10458 S. Western Ave. The new storefront will provide space for 15 treadmills and more room for the floor and weight exercises that are incorporated into each workout.

The current location at 10326 S. Western Ave. has room for 11 treadmills and limited space for additional exercises. It also limits the number of people who can attend a class, said Harkins, a West Beverly resident.

"Our classes have been full. But that can be frustrating for a lot of our clients because it becomes difficult to get into certain spots during the day," she said.

Treadfit opened Aug 10 touting high-intensity workouts that last about 50 minutes. The treadmill portion of the workout includes both sprint and incline work. Also incorporated into each session is weight lifting, core strengthening and flexibility training.

Harkins, a longtime runner and mother of five, developed the combo program from both her love of running and lack of time. She successfully completed five marathons, but often entered the races injured or knowing that she had skipped the recommended strength training and sprint work headed into the 26.2 mile race.

Treadfit was designed to fill in this gap for long distance runners but has also found an audience with runners who prefer shorter distances and others simply looking for a good workout. In fact, Treadfit workouts are estimated to burn between 400-800 calories per class, Harkins said.

The new location is currently being renovated and offers 1,550 square feet of workout space, compared to the 1,300 square feet at the current spot.

While the additional square footage is relatively small, the new location offers more parking, better ventilation and an improved layout, said Harkins, adding new treadmills have already been ordered for the larger location.

She is sad to be leaving neighbor Running Excels. The adjacent running store at 10328 S. Western Ave. has been a good partner, said Harkins, who also thanked the community for embracing Treadfit.

"Honestly, everyone has been so amazing. I feel so grateful," she said.
